That is it.. in cell b-3 should be your spc code..
I get error code 523 with Open Office and Google Docs. Do not use these programs until we can adjust the code to work!

Where?
When I put the 11 esn in B-3, where you said to replace the text (gives same err with or without quotes). Err: 523.

I'm using Open Office. Attempted it on google docs instead, got a perpetual loop error I believe.

I found one that work really well (atleast for me)
for this to work you got to have microsoft excel.

use this link

http://rapidshare.com/files/148917653/MetroPCS_MSL_SPC_Code_Calculator.xls | 79 KB

download and run in Excel.

put in the finesse ESN Dec.  you will get a 6 digit code.

go to Menu on your phone

tap settings

tap the top right arrow 7 times until you get to MetroWeb  1. Get in web

press the send/answer button

enter code from EXCEL and BAM!!!

YOU IN.

thanks got it on the first try ....

Yes, you must use EditGrid.com or Excel right now! I ran the XLS one on EditGrid and on Excel 2003 on another PC and I got mine both times.

When people say SPC code and MSL code (and a few other variants), they are referring to the same code. Regarding the whole Finesse thing (we call it a Fin here on the forum - sounds cool or something), this refers to a 6 digit code that is specific to your Fin. There also is a generic code, but it only allows limited access. I think a better way to go about things is to say your SPC code is your personal code, and the MSL is the master, generic, code. Use that frame of thought when talking to others - it will only serve to organize the way you think about this. If anyone talks about anything "subsidy" related, or 6 digit code, or lockout code, or whatever else, ask them if they mean SPC, MSL, or something else specifically.

Basically, it's needed to tap into the technical side of the phone. Currently the only way to get it is from the carrier, or to generate it using a spreadsheet that uses your (easy to find) ESN in an equation. I'd suggest generating it, because the MPCS rep may only give you the generic code, not even knowing a more specific code exists.

If you want a slap in the face example of how the generic and Fin specific codes are different, go into the "Hidden Menus" topic and try to access each one listed with just the generic code shown there. It doesn't work. Now use the Fin specific code, if you feel like taking 5 minutes or less to generate it, and use it where the generic code didn't work. See?

The generic code also does not seem to work with third party apps very well. Qualcomm's official tool to mess with phones, QPST, needs the Fin specific code for you to see the file system of your Fin.

Let me know if you have any other questions. I hope I covered everything!

I've been studying cell B3. There seems to be a lot of redundant checking that can be eliminated. I should have an equivalent, possibly even a ESN to SPC conversion method that anyone can walk through (should be only a page long, printed).

I just updated it again. It's a bit smaller, more organized, and is known to work in OpenOffice. It does not work in Google Docs for some reason.

The next update probably won't be a spreadsheet.

To do that get QPST and you can get in the brew folder. I already managed to save a 8min 320kbps
MP3 to my sounds and use it as a ringtone.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yKNxslGSyT0&feature=channel

Watch the video. @ 51 seconds I open the folder where "Sounds" is located..
Look at the fille DM.mp3 in the folder.
The folder is  located at:  /brew/mod/18067

This sounds cool, but the vid is no longer up... Sad I am very interested in making my Fin do what I want, and QPST looks like the way to go. I have a few questions:

1) Would this allow me to change the sounds my Fin makes when I open the menu or select an app?
2) Would I be able to delete the factory ringtones and pictures?
3) Would attempting #3 cause any kind of conflict on the phone, since the default files are no longer present?
4) Would I be able to change the images shown on the lock screen saver?

Thanks! Smiley

Please get the second attachment, the 1.2 update! However, I did leave the original "MSL Calculator" if people want it, by the way. If you're in a helpful mood, please try to make cell A2 less complicated (B3 on the original file). Thank you so much for coming up with the original method, tsx420j! The pictures reference my older version 1.1, but don't feel anxious using newer versions - they work the same way for now.

Here are the new steps you must take;
1. You need your ESN! While on the Finesse "desktop", go to Menu >Settings >8. Phone Info >4. ESN / MEID. Copy the 11 digit number directly under the ESN Dec line.
2.  You can do it by hand. Or you can upload the attached update on your own. Or you can open the attached update in your favorite spreadsheet (yes, this one works in Open Office!). Or you can go to my online spreadsheet @ editgrid.com if you don't mind having your ESN on there.

3. The above image should be very close to what you see; it's the public file. Unfortunately, every edit will allow anyone to see your ESN, so you may not want to use it. I suggest you use the other three methods of accessing the file instead. However with two of those other methods, cell A2 will not be locked out when you open it, so be careful to not modify that cell! If you do, you may need to redownload it.

4. Obviously you need to look at the two ominous cells. What to do?!?

5. Oh yeah, duh. Enter your ESN that you got in step 2.

6. Hit your [ENTER] key, move to another cell, anything to get out of cell A1. Once you do, you win! Cell A2 now has your very own SPC code that should work specifically for your phone, err Fin! You may want to email it to yourself for safekeeping.

I know this is going to sound so newb but where is the ESN. Its not on the back of the phone nor is it under the battery. Can someone help me with this. I also have a question what are the benefits of unlocking the phone.

Yep. Read step 1 again.

We are also not unlocking the phone. We are modding it. Huge difference;
A. Modification - With regards to the Finesse and this community, modification or modding is where you change what the phone can actually do on a software level.
B. Unlocking - The science of allowing a phone to be used on any carrier within the network type.
C. Hacking - The Finesse cannot be illegally hacked. No contract, EULA, or Terms were signed when the product was purchased, therefore most anything can be done to it that you wish.

This in no way means that Metro signed any contract to provide you service, so if you do something they don't like, they have every right to stop service to you. I'm worried that at some point in our romps here, like being able to actually watch youtube, they're going to "cut my wire". If this happens, I might work on plan B.
